Junior Golf
The Bulgarian Golf Association (BGA) is recognised by the Ministry of Youth and Sport and the international golf organisations and works in cooperation with them. Part of BGA’s mission is to develop and promote golf among children. To that end, for the tenth year running, BGA provides an excellent opportunity for children from Sofia, Elin Pelin, Novi Khan and other places not far from the capital to practise golf for free.
In recent years, thousands of children from Sofia and around the country have participated in BGA’s golf training initiative. We expect lots of new golf enthusiasts during the 2015 sporting season. This year, we invite to our training sessions children between the ages of 8 and 12.
If there are enough places available, we may also include up to 14-year-olds. Led by a BGA instructor, they will be able, step by step, to learn about the beauty, enjoyment and challenges which golf has to offer.
The venue is St. Sofia Golf Club & Spa – an excellent golf course, whose redesign by Paul McGinley was completed in 2012. http://www.stsofiagolf.com/
The programme runs from March to November on the following days:
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm.
The duration of each training session is one hour. The maximum number of children in a group is ten, all of similar ages and skills.
Usually the weather is on our side, but in case of snow, heavy rainfall, or temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius, the sessions are cancelled.
For the convenience of the little sportsmen and their parents, BGA provides free equipment for beginners.
BGA encourages the kids to attend more than one training session a week, depending on place availability in the groups.
Transportation is provided by the schools, the educational centres, or the parents. Though outside Sofia, the golf course is only 25 minutes away from the Orlov Most bridge, and is even closer to the city’s eastern districts.
The training program includes several stages. The first ten or so sessions are devoted to playing various golf games on the driving range.
Once the children have gained basic skills and learned the most important rules, they will be able to try out what they have learned on the golf course.
After a few months in the groups, participants will have the opportunity to obtain a non-official junior handicap (a number between 54 and 0, used to measure their potential playing ability).
More golf adventures will follow, like a chance for the kids to sign up for the Mini Cup tournament series.
The Mini Cup Series was set up especially for children to motivate them to improve their skills and experience the thrill of the game on different golf courses.
The tournaments are kindly hosted by the St. Sofia Golf Club, Pravets Golf Club and Pirin Golf & Country Club – all BGA members.
If a child attends the training sessions regularly and demonstrates an interest in the game and a desire for improvement, BGA is ready to offer all its available resources in support of the child’s long-term development.
This position of the Association is evidenced by the fact that it was in the BGA Junior Programme that some of the Bulgarian national team golfers discovered golf and acquired their basic skills. The Association has always stood behind them – from their first steps and to this day.
We believe that we provide the children with a really excellent opportunity by giving them access to a sport, which develops qualities like endurance, concentration, self-control and respect for others. We open the door to a game, which can bring lifelong enjoyment for the whole family.
If we have managed to attract your interest, then please write to us or give us a call.
